Daniel looked at the King and said ‘O king, the Most High
God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendour. Because of the high position he gave him, all
the people and nations and men of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put
to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he
promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled. But when his heart became arrogant and hardened
with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his
glory. He was driven away from people
and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass
like cattle; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he
acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and
sets over them anyone he washes.’
The king gassed at Daniel and listened as Daniel continued
to speak.
‘But you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled yourself,
though you knew all this. Instead, you
have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought
to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from
them. You praised the gods of silver and
gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honour the God who holds in
his hand your life and all your ways.
Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.’
Daniel walked up to the wall and read the inscription to the
people in the banqueting hall.
‘This is the inscription that was written:
Mene,
Mene, Tekel, Parsin
This is what these words mean:
Mene: God has
numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
Tekel: You have been
weighed on the scales and found wanting.
Peres: Your kingdom
is divided and given to the Medes and Persains.’
‘Bring the purple clothes and a gold chain!’ King Belshazzar called out to one of the
slaves. ‘Come place this on Daniel, he
is to be the third highest ruler in our kingdom!’ The king called out and the people stood to
honour Daniel.
Late that night an attack on the kingdom took place and the
King Belshazzar was slain. Darius the
Mede took over the kingdom at the age of sixty-two.
We all feel that we
are actually in control over our own lives; we feel that we have the power to
make the necessary changes. We believe
that it is our efforts that bring us what we need. I say, thank the Lord for this time of
leisure. I know God is in control over
my life and that I can bask in His glory.
I am the righteousness through Jesus Christ. Are you?
Don’t let the writing be on the wall for you today, instead, take some
time and start focusing on the Lord our God.
Give the Lord our God all the glory, honour and praises due His name.
This is taken form the
book of Daniel, chapter 5.
