Choosing Grace Over Retaliation

by Yvette van Niekerk 1 Thessalonians 5: 15 (NLT) “See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and all people.”
It's easy to scoff at this verse, especially when we've been wronged. The temptation to retaliate, to escalate the conflict, can be overpowering. How dare they treat me this way? It's maddening, especially when they justify their actions. As a Christian, I find myself at a crossroads. I must resist the urge to repay evil with evil. Instead, I'm called to be gracious and forgiving. Yet, at this moment, I'm struggling. It's tempting to think that 2000 years ago, the Apostle Paul couldn't fathom our modern complexities. But human nature remains constant. The challenge lies in shifting my perspective to see others through God's eyes. I've heard that I have the power to change my behaviour, but goodness, it's a formidable task. The person is a constant presence, a daily wellspring of frustration. So, where do I begin this journey of renewing my mind? Proverbs 4: 7-9 provides a beacon: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.” I'll admit, I'm not the wisest person on this earth. That's why I need to immerse myself in God's Word. It's not a casual endeavour; it demands my full attention. I must study day and night until something shifts within me. I must become unreasonably committed to God's Word. It's a discipline I'm struggling to instil, but it's the key to renewing my mind. How do I stay committed? How do I become unreasonably committed to God and His Word? Prayer: Father God, I long to saturate myself with Your Word. I confess my weakness, my lack of insight and wisdom. Please, when my old self surfaces, yearning for retribution, grant me the strength to choose grace. Grant me wisdom for each new day. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Navigating Forgiveness: Overcoming the Struggle

Luke 4: 2 - 4
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. (Luke 11:2-4 KJV) In Matthew 18, Peter sought guidance from Jesus on the frequency of forgiveness towards those who wronged him. He questioned, "Up to seven times?" To this, Jesus responded, "Not seven times, but seventy times seven." Here, the emphasis lay not in the numerical count, but in the underlying principle. Jesus was urging a perpetual state of forgiveness, a consistent thread woven into the fabric of our lives. He encouraged us, through today's Scripture, to be prepared to forgive each day. This was a deliberate framework to prevent us from harboring hurts, grievances, and letdowns. I find that enacting this principle is far from easy; it's a struggle, particularly in moments of distress. It's a realization that forgiveness isn't always straightforward, especially when one feels wronged and frustrated by the apparent impunity of the other party's behavior. What troubles me most is the intensity of my anger towards this person. It weighs heavily on my conscience, leading to self-imposed punishment. I grapple with releasing this resentment, with letting go and moving forward. At times, I even question my own sanity. In the tapestry of life, we encounter numerous individuals carrying their own unhealed wounds. Occasionally, they may act disrespectfully, utter words they shouldn't, or inflict pain upon others. While we cannot entirely shield ourselves from such offenses, we can choose how deeply they affect us. So, how can we navigate this journey without succumbing to offense, bitterness, or grudges? This is a question that haunts many of us. I constantly feel as though I'm letting down the Lord Jesus Christ. I find solace in my ceaseless prayers, imploring, "Lord, forgive me. I forgive them, but their actions continue to stoke my anger." In this process, I am learning that forgiveness is a profound act of self-liberation. It is not an endorsement of wrongdoings, but a conscious decision to release the burdens that weigh on my soul. By doing so, I am slowly but steadily reclaiming my inner peace and inching towards a life free from the chains of resentment. Remember, this journey towards forgiveness is not about perfection, but about progress. It's about taking one step at a time, leaning on faith, and trusting that with each act of forgiveness, we inch closer to the serenity our hearts yearn for. Prayer Your prayer reflects a sincere desire for growth and understanding. Let's refine it to make it more powerful and personal: Heavenly Father, I come before you with a humble heart, acknowledging my shortcomings and my tendency to complain about those who mistreat me. I recognize that I need to change my perspective towards them. Holy Spirit, I beseech you to guide me today, to help me see others through your loving eyes. Grant me the wisdom to understand their struggles and the compassion to respond with kindness. I choose to forgive, as I acknowledge that I, too, am not without fault, and there may be sinful thoughts in my heart. Wash me clean, dear God, and grant me the strength to walk in love and forgiveness. Lord, I ask for your divine grace to transform me, so that I may reflect your character in my interactions with others. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

Choosing Life: Prioritizing the Word

Introduction: In Romans 8:6, we are presented with a powerful choice: to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. This seemingly straightforward decision holds deeper implications than we might initially perceive. Let's delve into the profound wisdom embedded in this verse and explore its application in our lives. The Subtle Nature of Choosing Death: Choosing death isn't always as overt as a perilous leap from a precipice. It often manifests in subtler forms, primarily as being entangled in the trappings of this worldly realm. This entanglement blinds us to the abundant life that awaits through spiritual enlightenment. The Life-Giving Power of the Word: Proverbs 4:20-22 implores us to attend to God's words, for they are life itself. To be Word-minded is to embrace life in its purest form, transcending the confines of worldly preoccupations. Proverbs 4: 20 – 22 KJV “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.” The Mary and Martha Parable: In Luke 10: 38 - 42, the story of Mary and Martha vividly illustrates this principle. While Martha was engrossed in the practicalities of providing a meal, Mary sat at Jesus' feet, absorbing His teachings. When Martha voiced her concerns, Jesus gently reminded her of the essential choice before her. Mary's Wise Choice: Mary's decision to prioritize the Word over worldly responsibilities exemplifies the path to true life. By setting aside the immediate demands of living, she embraced the eternal wisdom that Jesus imparted. Avoiding the Pitfall of Martha: It's easy to empathize with Martha's predicament. We too may feel that our daily responsibilities are non-negotiable. Yet, as Martha discovered, Jesus is more than capable of providing for our needs when we prioritize Him. Putting the Word First: To choose life is to prioritize the Word above all else. Just as Jesus provided miraculously for the multitudes, He stands ready to meet our needs when we place Him at the forefront of our lives. Conclusion: Let us heed the wisdom of Romans 8:6 and the lessons from Mary and Martha. In our pursuit of life and peace, let us not be ensnared by the trappings of this world. Instead, may we choose the life-giving sustenance found in the Word, allowing it to guide and nourish our souls. Scripture Reading: Romans 8:5-13

Lesson Learned: Embracing Life's Changes

By Yvette van Niekerk Job 23: 10 (RSV) But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold. Throughout my life, I've come to realize that change is the only constant, even when we resist it. It may sound simplistic, but every day brings new experiences, and circumstances are in a perpetual state of flux. People, including myself, are prone to changing their minds. What held great importance yesterday might merely be a passing thought today. Amidst my countless aspirations, time often slips through my fingers. Between a full day of work and preparing dinner upon returning home, the hours seem to vanish. After dinner, we wash the dishes and settle in front of the TV. We wind down with a bath before heading to bed. This routine, while comforting, can sometimes feel like a never-ending loop. Reflecting on the story of Job, I am struck by the magnitude of his trials. He lost everything, even his beloved children. Yet, in the end, Job declared, "I shall come forth as gold." Currently, I find myself in a crucible of pressure, where my thoughts weigh heavily on me. I battle feelings of inadequacy and a sense of insignificance. The process of refinement is arduous, and at times, it feels like an uphill climb. I perceive the need for this refining process in my life. I believe the Lord is meticulously honing me, much like silver in a furnace. "For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us like silver." Lord, I yearn for Your purification, to be made worthy in Your eyes. I long to emerge as gold, but I recognize that this transformation requires God's hand to purify not just my faith, but also my speech and actions. My thoughts, too, need this sanctification. This morning, I earnestly seek You, Lord, for I am utterly dependent on You. I yearn to draw near to Your presence intentionally. Every minute of this day, I surrender into Your hands, seeking Your guidance and grace. Thank You, Lord, for hearing my prayers. You are acquainted with the challenges we face at this very moment. Today, I declare Psalm 34:19 over our circumstances: "Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but You, Lord, deliver us from them all." I will be attentive to Your voice, Lord. Guide us through this day. You are my rock, and I am profoundly grateful that You incline Your ear to me.

Embracing the Art of Waiting on the LORD

by Yvette van Niekerk
Lamentations 3: 25 (RSV) The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. How to wait on the LORD? This million-dollar question is of paramount importance. When I set aside time to wait for the Lord, I find solace in seeking a quiet space. It's crucial to consider my surroundings and the people in my vicinity. To maintain focus and clarity, I immerse myself in prayer and meditate on scriptures that hold relevance to my current situations. I am reminded that the Lord is gracious to those who patiently await Him, and He is kind to those who diligently seek Him. In my perspective, being in a tranquil environment with peace and stillness allows me to patiently await the answers I seek to move forward. Today, I acknowledge that answers don't always come immediately. Yet, when they do, I am often astonished, scarcely able to believe the remarkable occurrences. It's astonishing to witness how our Lord manifests Himself when we await His responses. Lord, today I long to hear from You. You understand my current feelings of inadequacy, unworthiness, and the sense of standing before You with a trembling heart. You know of my feelings of insignificance and inferiority today. Lord, You are aware of my concerns about the cake I baked. I wonder if this lady will appreciate it. I crafted it with the vision of it being delightful. I'm curious about her reaction upon seeing it. You are also aware, Lord, that my husband and I sense the weight of certain sanctions. May I implore You to lift these sanctions and grant us Your supernatural favor today. This morning, LORD, I recall Your Word in Mark 11:24, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Lord, I believe that You are at work on behalf of both myself and my husband. Jeremiah 33:3 assures us, "Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." Lord, in our current state, may I seek from You a revelation regarding our next steps? Can You speak into both my heart and my husband's heart so that we may address what You are revealing to us? Thank You, Lord, in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

Embracing Chooseday: Conquering Challenges with Faith and Purpose

by Yvette van Niekerk Joshua 14: 12 (RSV) So now give me this hill country of which the LORD spoke on that day; for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities: it may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out as the LORD said. My daughter (Odette de Beer - Amplify Your Business) coined a new word for Tuesday: “chooseday.” I love this because it emphasizes the power of choice. I believe that each person faces challenges every day, and it is through these challenges that we grow. This morning, I pray, “Lord my God, give me this hill country.” I feel I possess the necessary strength and knowledge, yet sometimes I lack the understanding and wisdom. In all I do, I echo the words of Caleb: I am not afraid to take on the next challenge, to climb the mountains as they come my way. I begin my day with these words from the most important book I study and read, the Bible: “The righteous will flourish like palm trees; they will grow like the cedars of Lebanon” (Psalm 92:12). I firmly believe that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Today, I want to encourage you that nothing in this world is impossible. It is often we who create the boundaries that make life seem insurmountable. God is currently equipping me in my new job. My life statement remains: “Lord, I know You have a good plan for my life, and I want to embrace the new challenges today. LORD, please show me how to conquer this day and anything I need to.” Remember, the Bible's message is particularly relevant to our personal lives every day. I recognize that God knows everything we say and do. He also gives each of us time to speak to Him. He is waiting to hear from us. Lord, is there something I need to take responsibility for? Help me to see and hear what it is You are saying to me today. Prayer Lord, this morning I earnestly seek You. Show me the path I need to walk and grant me the strength to become the person You have destined me to be, so that I may confidently stand in my rightful place. Father, I yearn to discover and fulfil my role in Your divine plan today. I long to be considered faithful, bearing abundant fruit throughout my life. I implore You to unveil any adjustments I must make to receive an overflow of grace to firmly hold my position. I choose You, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Reflection on life well-lived; trust; introspection and hope

by Yvette
As the years pass, I find myself reflecting more on my behavior, how I treat others, and how I interpret their treatment of me. I observe their actions and carefully consider their words. I wonder if this introspection is a common trait among those in their golden years. It's a stark contrast to my earlier days when I paid little mind to others' opinions or actions. Back then, their place in life and their pursuits didn't concern me; I was engrossed in my own endeavors. Now, lying on my bed, serenaded by the joyful melodies of birds, hope surges within me. Each new day brings fresh opportunities. I aspire to fill my thoughts with joy, to release the burdens of anger and hurt that have lingered for too long. Lord, today I place my trust in You, surrendering all my worries and anxieties into Your capable hands. I am reassured by 1 Peter 5:7, which implores us to "cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you," and find strength in Psalm 56:1-13, which declares, "Trust in God; He is stronger than any adversary." I resolve to shift my focus towards Your boundless mercy and grace. I will sing of Your enduring love, making known Your faithfulness through the ages. Your love stands unwavering, firmly established in the heavens. You promised, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations." Unlike David, I am a simple individual, without grand lineage to boast of. In You, I place my trust, and my praise shall forever be Yours. Prayer Lor my the favor of the LORD our God rest upon me and my family and friends, establish the work of our hands for us - yes, establish the work of our hands. Thank you Lord Jesus Amen

Embracing Divine Dreams: A Journey of Faith and Perserverance

by Yvette van Niekerk
In Genesis 37:8 (RSV), Joseph's brothers, consumed by jealousy, questioned his dreams of reigning over them. Despite their hatred, Joseph clung to his dreams, remaining steadfast in his faith. In our own lives, not everyone will support our dreams, but like Joseph, we must hold onto them tightly, trusting in God's plan even when it's hard to see. Genesis 37: 8 (RSV) His brothers said to him, “are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to have dominion over us?” So they hated him yet more for his dream and for his words. Jealousy turned Joseph's brothers bitter, blinding them to God's greater purpose. In moments of despair, it's natural to lose sight of our dreams. We might feel adrift, our passion fading like mist in the wind. Yet, even in these moments, we can turn to God, asking for a renewed dream and vision. We can pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit, seeking the strength to stand firm in God's Word. During challenging times, it's essential to lean on faith. In our struggles, we can echo Joseph's plea, asking God to help us trust in His plans. We may feel lost and unable to face the day, but through faith, we find the strength to move forward. Let us pray for restoration in our lives, both in our positions and in the world around us. As we reflect on our circumstances, we can turn to God for help. Just as the people of Israel faced sudden war, we too may encounter unexpected challenges. In these moments, we can bring our concerns before God, seeking His intervention. Let us pray for peace in the land of Israel and God's people worldwide. In our journey, we are reminded to trust in God's timing and to hold onto our dreams, no matter the obstacles. Through faith, we can find the strength to face each day, knowing that God is with us, guiding us toward His divine purpose.

Empowered by Faith: Overcoming Challenges with Luke 10: 19

"Luke 10:19 (RSV) reassures us: 'Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you.' This profound scripture not only instills faith but also encourages us to recognize the abundant opportunities that often go unnoticed amidst life's challenges. As a devoted Christian, I may not have physically encountered serpents or scorpions, but in the spiritual realm, I have triumphed over numerous challenges. This scripture is a beacon of hope, reminding me that God has bestowed upon me the authority to overcome all obstacles. The knowledge that I possess the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions, coupled with the assurance that I am shielded from harm, emboldens my spirit. The concept of 'nothing shall hurt me' resonates deeply within me, serving as a constant reminder of God's unwavering protection. This assurance empowers me to face each day with courage, embracing new projects and experiences with a heart full of faith. I find solace in the incredible truth that I am not alone in my endeavors; the Lord, in His infinite wisdom, strengthens me. All glory and honor belong to God, for I am merely an instrument of His divine will. Through Christ Jesus, I draw strength, recognizing that my abilities are magnified through His grace. With this understanding, I approach life's challenges with confidence, trusting in God's promise that nothing shall hurt me." Heavenly Father, I come before you in gratitude, centering my thoughts on Your Word. I am thankful, Lord, for the assurance that "nothing shall hurt me." Your protective hand is stretched out over my life, guiding my path and shielding me from harm. I humbly seek your divine guidance, trusting that you will illuminate the right doors of opportunity for me and my family in the days to come. May your wisdom direct our steps and may we walk in the light of your blessings. In the holy and powerful name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

Letter to my friends

Dear Beloved Friends in Christ, I hope this message finds you in the peace and grace of our Lord. Today, I am compelled to share with you a powerful scripture that has been resonating in my heart. In Lamentations 3:21-22 (RSV), it is written, "But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end." As we meditate upon these words, let us be filled with awe and gratitude. Amid life's challenges, it is truly astounding to know that our hope rests in the unwavering love of the Lord. We must remind ourselves that we can find hope in the Lord's love, which is boundless and everlasting. His love never ceases; He will never cut us off. His mercies are inexhaustible and never come to an end. In these trying times, it is crucial to immerse ourselves in the Word of God. By doing so, we renew our minds and become like sponges, absorbing His teachings and wisdom. When life squeezes us, and we face trials and tribulations, what spills out of us is the beautiful aroma of God's love and grace. This fragrance is refreshing, and it stems from being filled with the Lord's Word. I have observed a lack of care and mercy in our interactions with one another. It pains my heart to witness the absence of essential virtues such as mercy and respect among us. In our journey as Christians, let us not forget to extend these qualities to others, just as the Lord extends His mercy and love to us. Let us bow our heads in prayer: "Dear Lord, we come before you with humble hearts, seeking your guidance and strength. Help us not to lose hope, even in the face of challenges. Teach us to place our trust in You and Your sacred scriptures. Grant us the wisdom and patience to navigate every situation life throws our way. Lord, we love and worship You, and we place our lives in Your hands. In the precious name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen." May the love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ be with each one of you, comforting and sustaining you in every moment. In Christ's love, Yvette

Affirmation in the Almighty God

In the sacred verses of Exodus 35:35, I find affirmation that the Almighty has endowed me with creativity, a divine gift meant to be celebrated and utilized. It is a profound calling, one I believe I am meant to fulfill through various channels. God has whispered His purpose into my soul, guiding me to serve Him through my passion for baking, crafting intricate cake toppers, chronicling my thoughts in a blog, and expressing my love through embroidery.
As I immerse myself in these creative endeavors, I am reminded of my earnest desire to remain in His divine presence. Proverbs 23:7 cautions me about the power of my thoughts, urging me to align them with the purity of His teachings. I long to shed the cloak of negativity that has draped my mornings and conversations. Thus, I declare my willingness to be taught, to open myself to the transformative touch of the Holy Spirit, and to renew my mind with the Word of God. Though I have fashioned charming fondant animals and crafted exquisite cakes, I yearn for more. I crave the ability to nurture creative thinking, to birth extraordinary ideas that could reshape my destiny. Lord, grant me the grace to perceive Your messages not just spiritually but also through the tangible world around me. Help me develop the vision that Joel 2:28 speaks of, for I confess that I have lost the art of dreaming. Repeated discouragements have dimmed the light of my aspirations, leaving me feeling stagnant and unfulfilled as I approach my 60th year. Yet, I hold onto hope, for I know Your timing is divine. I await Your vision for my life, yearning for the revelation of Your purpose. With an open heart and a spirit receptive to Your guidance, I surrender my anxieties. Lord, I pray for Your wisdom to discern the path You've laid out for me. In this moment of seeking and listening, I rest my soul in Your hands, trusting that Your divine plan will unfold in its perfect time. Amen.
