Spiritual Gifts

by Yvette van Niekerk

Spiritual Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4 (NIV)

4 "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them."

Once you became a Christian and accepted the Lord Jesus as your saviour, you receive the Holy Spirit. If you received the prophetic gift, you might say something to this extent: "See that happens when you don't pay attention." This person is convicting you to show you what's wrong.

Someone could have a serving gift and would say, "Can I help you clean, it might go a little faster." She wants to meet practical needs.

There may be someone who received a teaching gift, and they might say, "The reason you dropped the glasses was the tray was lopsided." They want to clarify the truth. Someone with the gift of exhortation would say, "the next time we buy fruit, let us not forget about the yoghurt." They want to give a practical solution to the problem. My daughter has the gift of giving. She cannot help herself when someone is in need; she tries to help them. My friend has the gift of mercy, and when she sees someone has been hurt, she will give them a hug trying to console them.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we know with all the Spiritual Gifts, we can only operate in the presence of the Holy Spirit. This function is working in our churches and with our congregation. Bless each one of us so we can be a blessing to our friends and family, in the name of Jesus Christ.

Amen

Generation Z

by Yvette van Niekerk

Psalm 51: 10 Living Bible

"Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires."

I have come to realize that most young people want authenticity. The real deal so to speak, I know I hate it when I have to deal with fake people. You never really know where you stand with a person who acts and isn't true to themselves or other people around them. I read that CNBC did a survey showing that 67% of Generation Z agrees to be true to one's values and beliefs make that person cool. Speaking from my own experience I appreciate it when a person is real and pure.

I am working on my attitude towards people in general by putting other people above me. I do not want to hurt anybody and I try to make them feel more important than myself. I told my husband over the weekend that I would do anything for my children because I hardly see them and will go out of my way so that I do not offend or hurt their feelings. I realise that I am not perfect. Here is the catch I need to stay honest to myself so that God can transform my heart.

The Message 2 Corinthians 7 verse 1 "With promises like this to pull us on, dear friends, let's make a clean break with everything that defiles or distracts us, both within and without. Let's make our entire lives fit and holy temples for the worship of God."

Keeping God's word close to me I am trying to purify my own life. I want to make sure that I am acceptable and that my body and spirit isn't contaminated. Working towards perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. My prayer remains the same as Psalm 51 where King David prayers "create in me a pure heart Lord, and renew within me a steadfast spirit." I am constantly exposed to the filthy and corrupted world around me, TV and Radio etc. I need God's help to be authentic and pure.

Reflect: God's Word washes me and cleanses my heart and mind. I want to be pure at heart and not a hypocrite who is deceitful and only Jesus can help me stay authentic.

I have asked my husband to check me if I am acting in a role that isn't authentic he should point it out to me. It is my prayer that God will also show me through the Holy Spirit when I am acting like a hypocrite.

Prayer

Dear Father God, please transform this body of mine, to be more like the Lord Jesus Christ. I know Jesus died and rose from the grave for me. Help me to draw near to You each day, create in me a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. Help me in glorifying You Lord and please pour out Your grace over my life today. Father, I surrender my life into Your hands and I come as I am. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

Holy Week - Palm Sunday

 by Yvette van Niekerk

Mark 11:1-11 (The Message)

Entering Jerusalem on a Colt

11        1-3 When they were nearing Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany on Mount Olives, he sent off two of the disciples with instructions: “Go to the village across from you. As soon as you enter, you’ll find a colt tethered, one that has never yet been ridden. Untie it and bring it. If anyone asks, ‘What are you doing?’ say, ‘The Master needs him, and will return him right away.’”

4-7 They went and found a colt tied to a door at the street corner and untied it. Some of those standing there said, “What are you doing untying that colt?” The disciples replied exactly as Jesus had instructed them, and the people let them alone. They brought the colt to Jesus, spread their coats on it, and he mounted.

8-10 The people gave him a wonderful welcome, some throwing their coats on the street, others spreading out rushes they had cut in the fields. Running ahead and following after, they were calling out,

Hosanna!

Blessed is he who comes in God’s name!

Blessed the coming kingdom of our father David!

Hosanna in the highest heaven!

11 He entered Jerusalem, then entered the Temple. He looked around, taking it all in. But by now it was late, so he went back to Bethany with the Twelve.

oOo

It's noted that some of the most familiar teachings and stories of the gospels occur during this week preceding Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.

As believers, we have our foundation with Christ and our faith build in studying His Life.

Jesus Christ was fully God; He also was fully man and walked a human life. He enjoyed joy and love with suffering and hardship. The Lord Jesus teaches us by example, showing us how to navigate challenges.

My learning right now is to focus on Jesus' demonstration as to what it looks like to live with a strong connection to God the Father and how to show deep compassion to people.

My life is a struggle especially when it comes to compassion for people.

I find it extremely difficult when it comes to people, I seem to get burned every time I let my guard down. Trusting people isn't something I do well, the odd occasion I do, guess what, and they burn me. Hey but never use my life as an example, the best example we can follow is the Lord Jesus Christ's.

Prayer

Dear Father God, I want to connect with You today here, as I seek You in Your Word. I am focusing on the life of my Lord Jesus Christ, I pray Holy Spirit, please help me. In Jesus Christs Name Amen

Created for an eternal purpose!

by Yvette van Niekerk

I believe I have been created for an eternal purpose.

Ephesian 2: 7 - 10 MSG

Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It's God's gift from start to finish! We don't play the major role. If we did, we'd probably go around bragging that we'd done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing."

After Adam and Eve's sin, we were given a second chance in life, through the Lord Jesus Christ. To be re-created spiritually. I believe I have been created for a purpose. If so, how will I live my life? I believe God wants me to build my life upon His Word, the Bible. I have been working hard at renewing my mind. I have been cleaning my life from sins I believe polluting my life. I believe God wants me to live my life to the fullest, He has placed me right where I'm supposed to be. For a very long time, I was wondering am I in the right place, doing the right thing? Yes, I am. God wants me here and I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

Prayer

Dear Father God, I believe according to Your Word that I am where You want me to be, and I believe Lord that all the time in this world and the next You are showering me with grace and kindness upon me in Christ Jesus. Saving Lord is all Your idea and all Your work. I believe and trust You enough to let You do it in my life. In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ Amen

God is my Lord!

by Yvette van Niekerk

God is my Lord!

2 Samuel 7: 18-21-22-24 Msg

"King David went in, took his place before GOD, and prayed: "Who am I, my Master GOD, and what is my family, that you have brought me to this place in life? But that's nothing compared to what's coming, for you've also spoken of my family far into the future, given me a glimpse into tomorrow, my Master GOD! What can I possibly say in the face of all this? You know me, Master GOD, just as I am. You've done all this not because of who I am but because of who you are - out of your very heart! - but you've let me in on it. "This is what makes you so great, Master GOD! There is none like you, no God but you, nothing to compare with what we've heard without own ears. And who is like your people, like Israel, a nation unique in the earth, whom God set out to redeem for himself (and became most famous for it), performing great and fearsome acts, throwing out nations and their gods left and right as you saved your people from Egypt? You established for yourself a people - your very own Israel! - your people permanently. And you, GOD, became their God."

I want to meditate and focus on the fact that GOD is my GOD. Thinking back when I named my children I used my dad's name and father-in-laws names, my daughter received a name her dad choose for her, and my youngest son received his name through his dad's decision. I know, in Biblical times a name was very important. Often, much of a persons experience, character and outlook were affected by their name.

God has many names which express important aspects of Him to us His people. In the Old Testament times, God's people understood His power, importance and impact of God's names.

As we read 2 Samuel 7 verses 18 - 23 we see that King David calls God "Adonai" which means master and Lord. King David who is a respected and powerful king, acknowledges that his greatness before man is nothing compared to the greatness of God. King David is acknowledging God's sovereignty.

We see how awesome God really is, He showed this side of Himself to Israel by making a way for His people to escape captivity and settle in a new land. 2 Samuel 7 verses 23. When God performs great and wonderful things for Israel, do you know He can do the same for us?

We see God had made a way for us through the Lord Jesus Christ once we accept Jesus as our saviour we acknowledge God as "Adonai" our master and Lord. Matthew 10 verse 23.

Prayer

Father God, teach me to see who I am in You Lord Jesus, thank You for accepting me. Thank You, for being my Lord and Master. I am your servant thank You, Lord God. Amen

Unconfessed sin - by Yvette van Niekerk

1 John 3: 21 "If our hearts do not condemn us."

Do you remember when the Israelites conquered Jericho, the strongest city in the Promised land, the Israelites were defeated by a handful of soldiers in a small village called Ai? Joshua was devasted, he tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the Lord. Joshua 7: 6 and he prayed: "The other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?"  How did the Lord God respond? This will surprise you, "The Lord said to Joshua, 'Stand up, What are you doing down on your face? Israel has sinned.'" Oh, wow!

One of the Israeli soldiers named Achan, stole the spoils of battle which belonged to the Lord God. Jericho is the first city in the Promised land to be conquered, and God said the 'firstfruits' of all we have must be given to Him Proverbs 3:9. The treasures of the next nine battles belonged to the people, but Jericho's treasures belong to God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Lord God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I want to pray that You will restore my life. Lord if there are sins in my life that I need to repent off, please reveal it to me, so that I can pray and repent from my sinful heart. Lord according to 1 John 3 verse 21 to 22 "If our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask because we keep his commands and do what pleases him." Today, I repent of anything that might stand between myself and You Lord. I pray to create in me a clean heart and a pure spirit. Lord, please help me today, to do my best job now. I pray that You will restore my Blogspot and that Your hand will rest on my blog. Lord, I pray for provision for my own stuff. I need Your help today, without You Lord I am lost please help me. In the holy name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen

"eat that frog."

by Yvette van Niekerk

Mark 1: 35 ESV

Jesus Preaches in Galilee

"And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed."

I hate making my bed, but I have learned when I get out of bed and not yet left my bedroom, I can tackle making my bed. It makes me feel accomplished. I know that sound silly, but I do. My bedroom looks tidy and neat, and I feel I can start my day.

Have you ever read Brian Tracy's book "Eat that frog!"? I have, and it changed my perspective on life.  I read Mark Twain, said: "if you ever have to eat a live frog, it's best done first thing in the morning." Yuck, it must be dreadful, but it is good advice. Because you can go through the rest of your day knowing the most solid task is behind you.

So, if I want God to do the super, I'll need to do the natural. That says I'll need to get started, praying first thing each morning.

So, how we start our day sets the tone for the rest of it, yet many of us never give the morning a second through beyond getting out the door on time.

We see the Lord Jesus making the most of the early part of each day. Mark 1 give one example: "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." On another occasion before appointing his disciples in the morning, he prayed all night. Now, what's that one thing you least like to do, but you feel best about afterwards? That's your frog. It's often the hardest, task to establish, but it pays the biggest dividends.

Prayer

Lord God, we pray for Your supernatural favour in our lives today, please help us take charge of our lives. By first speaking to You each morning, then tackling our day. Bless each of us with Your hand of supernatural favour. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Love in Action

by Yvette van Niekerk

"Gracious speech is like clover honey - good taste to the soul, quick energy for the body." Proverbs 16: 24 MSG

"Here is a simple rule of thumb for behaviour: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back? Run-of-the-mill sinners do that. If you only help those who help you, do you expect a medal? Garden-variety sinners do that. If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that's charity? The stingiest of pawnbrokers does that." Luke 6: 31 - 34 MSG

"Love is not a feeling, its an act of your will." Do you agree with me when it comes to the meaning of Love? I believe love is all about what we are doing for each other, it involves actions. I am reminded that love costs us something.

Key elements of love

  1. Love is a kind of actions.
  2. Spending quality time together.
  3. Speaking loving words.
  4. Being Thoughtful with presents.
  5. Physical affection

Does any of the above communicate love more effectively to you? I realise my communication of love is different from the way my husband understands love and receives it.

Love is a kind of action. We express love through serving our partners, through seeking to meet their needs in a specific way. Ask your partner what kinds of actions are most meaningful to them.

Spending quality time together. I love it when my husband just comes and sits with me. We don't have to touch each other or talk but his there with me. Then when we are all alone we are able to talk together, and when he takes me on a date night eating together is so much fun.

We all know that words can kill anything if they aren't used in the right way. Loving words have great power and in building my husband I'm built. Speak kindly to each other. I know my husband loves hearing words of affirmation as it allows him to feel appreciated.

I know my husband loves to eat "biltong" its dried meat and he enjoys the taste and I love buying some for him when he doesn't expect it. Every day is a special occasion to my mind so I try and do this as often as I can.

I actually never really think about touching my husband, but I have come to realise he needs me to put my hand on his shoulder or just touch his back when I sit with him. I believe he feels loved when I show him affection. As a rule, we always walk around the shopping centre holding hands, I like the security of his strong hands over mine. I love it when he just gives me a kiss out of nowhere. There are other things that show affection such as lovemaking, sexual foreplay and a back massage every now and then are always a good idea.

Marriages are always interesting and we need to build our marriages. The sad part is people are living in a "throwaway society" there is nothing we cannot replace, even our marriages can fall into this category.

Prayer

Father God, today I want to pray and ask that You will guide each one of us when it comes to our spouses. Give each one of us wisdom and insight and most of all understanding. Remind each one of us that we all are people, we all struggle with emotions, our personalities differ, our desires and frustrations are different. Lord help us to remember out spouses are people we genuinely care for and love that is why we married them in the first place. Bless each marriage today, give us the love we need to share with each other. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen

Invest 1st in Yourself!

by Yvette van Niekerk

Have you heard Warren Buffet's quote, "The best investment you will ever make is in yourself?"

Psalm 51: 7 - 17 MSG

"Soak me in your laundry, and I'll come out clean, scrub me, and I'll have a snow-white life. Tune me into foot-tapping songs, set these once-broken bones to dancing. Don't look too close for blemishes give me a clean bill of health. God, make a fresh start in me, shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life. Don't throw me out with the trash, or fail to breathe holiness in me. Bring me back from grey exile, put a fresh wind in my sails! Give me a job teaching rebels your ways so the lost can find their way home. Commute my death sentence, God, my salvation God, and I'll sing anthems to your life-giving ways.  Unbutton my lips, dear God; I'll let loose with your praise."

I was thinking of how counterintuitive and selfish this statement is, but then I realised that the Lord Jesus also first spent time investing in himself before in us.

Listen to what the Lord Jesus says in Matthew 11 verse 28 to 30 MSG "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me, and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me, and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."

The Lord Jesus calls this the "unforced rhythms of grace." "Come to me."

My priority and main purpose these days is to spend time with the Lord. Looking at what the Lord Jesus has done in one day:  Jesus was always investing in others. He was constantly pouring out. Jesus went from preaching in the synagogue to casting out a demon, healing a sick friend, and at sundown, ministering to the entire city gathered at His door, read Mark 1: 21 - 34. What I realised that He always spent time in the presence of the Father before He poured out to the people. Time praying, listening, and refuelling. Mark 1: 35 "very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolated place and there he prayed."

The Lord Jesus also invited His disciples into His unforced rhythm of grace. We read in Mark 6 verse 31 - 32 ESV "And he said to them, 'Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest awhile.' For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat."

So I am trying to equip myself so that I can give to others. How can I do this, I need to rest spiritually, physically, and mentally.  If my vessel is empty how can I pour anything out?

I want to check with you, are you investing in yourself daily and are you spending time with the Lord? Investing in your soul is necessary.

Prayer

Father God, today I commit myself into Your hands, O Lord, I hear You singing over me. I am so grateful to spend time in Your presence. I love and worship You, fill me with Your Holy Spirit and cleanse me so that I am acceptable to You Lord. I worship and praise You, You are my provider, my Salvation and my King. Please, Lord, I pray for my family, calling out their names before Your throne, salvation to each person that doesn't have a personal relationship with You. In Jesus Christ's Name, Amen.

Trust - I know it is developed over time.

Isaiah 26: 4 ESV "Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock."

I have allowed trying situations this past couple of months to come my way, and it frustrated me, and I was so upset. And to top it off, I thought, "I'm believing God. I'm trusting God." When I didn't speak right, worry about everything, grumble and cry.

I honestly believe through my anxiety and my panic-stricken heart, my words didn't match my actions. I realized trusting God has to be more than just words, attitudes and action.

Going forward I know trusting in God is possible it's just I've been off my game, or better yet my mojo was completely off. I have allowed circumstance in my life to cloud my judgement. Of course, my emotional state has a huge part to play when it comes to how I have reacted. To say the least, I realise worry is a waste of time, and I must turn my attention to God.

Prayer

O Heavenly, Father, please forgive me for constantly worrying about things I have no control of. You are always there for me, draw me closer to You today, I am confessing I have turned away from You. Forgive me and please let me draw closer to You, in Jesus Christ name. Amen
